RightBio Metrics Featured in CAP Today: Advancing Safe NG/OG Tube Placement

A Milestone for RightBio Metrics

RightBio Metrics is proud to announce that CAP Today, a trusted source in pathology and laboratory medicine, has featured the RightSpot pH Indicator in a recent publication. This recognition underscores the growing importance of accurate NG/OG tube placement confirmation and the role that gastric pH testing plays in preventing serious medical complications.

In the article, CAP Today highlights the RightSpot Gastric pH Indicator’s unique ability to confirm gastric acidity for nasogastric and orogastric tubes. The product, which is FDA-cleared and CLIA-waived, provides a non-invasive, highly accurate method to ensure that feeding tubes are safely positioned—without relying on X-rays or outdated techniques like auscultation.

Why This Recognition Matters

CAP Today is a leading publication in laboratory medicine, widely read by pathologists, clinical researchers, and healthcare professionals who rely on its insights for best practices and innovations in patient care. Having the RightSpot Gastric pH Indicator featured in this forum represents a significant step in raising awareness about safer, more effective NG/OG tube placement methods.

Mitigating the High Risk of Misplaced Feeding Tubes

Despite advancements in healthcare, traditional methods of confirming NG/OG tube placement remain inaccurate, unsanitary, and prone to errors. Studies have found that up to 56 percent of feeding tubes in pediatric and neonatal patients are misplaced, leading to potentially life-threatening complications such as aspiration pneumonia.

RightBio Metrics was founded on a simple principle: “Lose the Whoosh.” We are dedicated to eliminating the risks associated with misplaced NG/OG tubes by offering a precise, science-backed alternative to unreliable methods like auscultation, also known as “the whoosh test.”

What Makes the RightSpot Gastric pH Indicator Unique?

The RightSpotpH® Indicator is the only FDA-cleared, CLIA-waived device specifically designed to confirm NG/OG tube placement through pH testing. Unlike traditional methods, this innovative product:

  • Ensures a fully closed system, preventing exposure to aspirate and reducing infection risk
  • Provides an instant, color-based pH reading, accurately identifying whether a tube is in the stomach (pH ≤ 5.5)
  • Drastically reduces the need for X-rays, reducing radiation exposure and hospital costs
  • Now available with ENFit connectors, making them highly compatible and eliminating the need for adapters

Proven Impact in Patient Safety

RightBio Metrics’ dedication to improving patient safety has earned industry recognition. The RightSpotpH® Indicator won the First Place Patient Safety Innovation Award at the World Patient Safety, Science & Technology Summit, coming out on top over 55 other submissions from 6 different countries.

Healthcare professionals who have used the RightSpot report greater confidence in tube placement decisions—especially in high-risk environments like ICUs, NICUs, and emergency departments.

A Step Forward for Safer Feeding Tube Placement

Being featured in CAP Today is a testament to RightBio Metrics’ ongoing commitment to patient safety and innovation. With misplaced NG/OG tubes remaining a significant medical challenge, it is more important than ever to adopt proven, evidence-based solutions like the RightSpotpH® Indicator.

As healthcare providers continue to prioritize accuracy, efficiency, and patient safety, RightBio Metrics remains dedicated to eliminating preventable harm and advancing the standard of care for NG/OG tube placement nationwide. We are grateful for the opportunity to be highlighted in a publication such as Cap Today, and are proud to continue increasing patient safety and awareness about misplaced NG/OG tubes.

Clinical verification note: The use of pH testing, when appropriate, is validated nationally by organizations for nutrition, patient safety, and emergency care. pH testing provides best-practice evidence-based nursing care, especially over auscultation (whoosh test), and studies confirm reduced radiation exposure, fewer delays in feeding, medicating, or irrigating, and lower costs over X-rays. For additional context, review our Clinical Evidence.

Compatibility note: RightSpotpH® ENFit® Indicators fit ALL SIZE tubes and syringes fitted with ISO 80369-3 conforming ENFit® Connectors. RightSpotpH® Small Bore Indicators fit most legacy enteral syringes and all legacy tubes 10 Fr or less in diameter. RightSpotpH® Indicators fit luer lock syringes and tubes larger than 10 Fr. They are the number one selling brand of in-device pH Indicators for use with ENFit®. However, we are continuing to support the legacy tubes and syringes for the time being.

Salem Sump note: The RightSpotpH® Indicator was initially designed by and for ED usage after two sentinel events occurred, each resulting in charcoal being tragically administered to the lung. In addition, many Salem® Sumps now come with a reusable repositionable ENFit® connector for use with ENFit® enabled syringes and the RightSpotpH® ENFit® Indicator. Ask your Salem Sump provider for more information and review the Instructions for Use.
