At this year’s Synova NICU Leadership Forum, Inova Children’s Hospital shared compelling results from a practice change in their NICU — replacing routine X-ray confirmation of feeding tube placement with point-of-care gastric pH testing using the RightSpot® pH Indicator.

Their results speak volumes: improved workflow efficiency, reduced radiation exposure for vulnerable neonates, and over $80,000 in cost savings within just six months.

Results at a Glance:

  • 2,058 POC pH tests performed

  • >$80,000 in cost savings

  • Radiation exposure reduced by minimizing X-ray use

  • Workflow streamlined — less interruption for nurses, radiology, and providers

  • POC testing is now unit standard for infants >24 weeks gestational age

These results will also be featured at the American Nurses Association Magnet Conference later this year. We’re grateful to Inova’s NICU team — especially Margaret Thomas and Micheline Guirguis — for leading with evidence and sharing their outcomes so generously.
